and societal impact

Museums have always had a crucial role in society conserving, fostering and representing cultural heritage, and helping people connect through it to deeper meanings and learnings in a fast-changing world. Amidst the accelerating change and wicked grand challenges to solve, we have witnessed how some forerunner museums, cultural institutions, and GLAM activist (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) have expanded our thinking of what kind of impact museums are able to create. At Pentagon Design, we are devoted to accelerate this movement with our design work and help museums and cultural institutions in Finland and abroad to transform and take on new roles that enable them to create abundant value for people, partners, stakeholders, the museum itself and the society at large.

Our team has helped several museums and cultural institutions over the years to rethink their purpose and vision; renew their roles and value creation and recreate their services, spaces, operational models and brands. Being a team of multidisciplinary design experts, we work with museums and cultural institutions all the way from foresight and customer understanding to co-creation of future visions and concepts and concrete outcomes such as exhibitions, services and visual identities. Our job is to support museums and other cultural institutions to grow into the best versions of themselves.

Our recent projects include, for example, the co-creation of the purpose and concept for the forthcoming national Wilderness and Nature Culture Museum, that aims to grow everyone’s connectedness to nature. We helped the museum team to define the strategic outlines and future vision through a participatory process including multisectoral expertise. We were also happy to partner with HAM to create a whole new customer service concept to deliver an outstanding customer experience for the visitors of Helsinki Biennale, that took place in Vallisaari island.

Something that makes us tick are long-term collaborations and journeys from future vision to concrete outcomes, such as our partnerships with Maritime Centre Vellamo and Tampere Art Museum. Our journey with Maritime Centre Vellamo started a few years ago with vision, purpose and concepting work, including the exploration digital customer experience, and continued with the design of the immersive Ruotsinsalmi 2020 exhibition.

With Tampere Art Museum we visioned a new direction for the museum, listened to customers’ views and needs and concretized them for the new museum building, Siilo.

After years of inspiring collaborations and nearly 20 participatory design projects with museums and cultural institutions, we are excited to take the next step, or more like a leap, to the Future of Museums. In the recent months our team has explored future trends and opportunities to open up new perspectives and discussions of what kind of roles museums can take to catalyst better futures. This foresight work has resulted into a role-mapping tool for museums and a Future of Museums report, that serve as a beginning for an open and collaborative process, and an invite to join in.
