Exhibition and visual identity design of the Lahti Ski Club’s celebration exhibition

Retail & spatial design, Visual identity & guidelines, Exhibition design, Customer & visitor experience design

In the spring of 2022, the Lahti Ski Museum opened an exhibition called “For the Love of Skiing – Lahti Ski Club 100 years” to celebrate a century of skiing achievements, historical moments, and memories of skiing companions. We worked closely with the museum team to plan the exhibition, aiming to create an emotional storytelling experience that highlights the sense of community and the atmosphere of a grand sports event.

Along with the exhibition, a small living area and a pedagogical space were designed to facilitate discussions about the phenomena presented in the exhibition, particularly with school groups. The museum team was involved throughout the process, and service design methods were used to ensure the exhibition met the needs of the visitors.

Approach

Exhibition and visual identity design began by defining the exhibition’s themes, the functions of the different spaces, the desired look of the space, and the needs and expectations of the users. Once the core points had been identified, we translated the ideas into written and visual form. We created a floor plan that considered the themes, functions, customer flow, necessary support functions in the exhibition, the pedagogical space, and the small lounge. The visual appearance of the exhibition was presented through visualizations.

After conceptualization, we created more detailed drawings of the exhibition space and furniture and developed a sketch-level lighting plan. We were also involved in the graphic design, including the development of the graphic style, exhibition logo, marketing materials, infographics, and character illustrations for the exhibition.

Result

An immersive and multi-sensory experience with the atmosphere of a grand sports event was created through the use of colors, materials, visual elements and sound. The Lahti Ski Club members warmly welcome visitors at the start of the exhibition. The journey continues through the club’s history to the Finlandia Ski Marathon. At the end of the exhibition, the focus is on the club’s young athletes. Festive medal colors are used throughout the exhibition.

Additionally, the festival atmosphere is conveyed through joyful pictures, and a rain of medals and festive flags hanging from the ceiling. The future is discussed in a pedagogical space where nature is present through colors, materials, and images. The exhibition has been well-received by both museum staff and visitors.
