Muoto – Shaped for Purpose. Building a new sustainable packaging concept
Muoto is a packaging initiative by Metsä Spring, aiming to disrupt the market with a natural and sustainable solution that combines structure, functionality and design. Muoto products are made of locally sourced softwood and hardwood pulp.

Challenge
Muoto aims to disrupt the market with a natural and sustainable solution that combines structure, functionality and design. The objective has been to create unique and ownable design for various packaging solutions for take-away and industrial segments. Muoto is committed to offering sustainable, high-quality packaging solutions made in Europe that meet the needs of today’s businesses and consumers.
Approach
Pentagon Design has been a design partner for Metsä Spring already in the early stages of the Muoto product development. The main goals in the beginning were defining the design DNA of Muoto products for different segments and developing functional products that meet customer expectations and while aligning with manufacturing restrictions and possibilities. Based on the defined design DNA, individual product designs have been developed through a close and iterative process with the client, supporting early-stage prototyping, manufacturing and market testing.
Result
Our continuous collaboration has resulted in the creation of the modular Twin packaging concept for the take-away segment, consisting of several new packaging formats and sizes designed to cover the segment’s most relevant needs. The work continues with the development of new sizes and formats for the industrial packaging segment as well.
In addition, Pentagon Design has been a day-to-day partner in marketing communication. We defined the brand’s communication hierarchy, created a comprehensive image concept as the foundation for marketing, designed the product name hierarchy, the exhibition concept and retail sales packaging concept, and carried out various marketing activities, all to support the successful launch of Muoto products to the market during the pre-commercial sales phase.
We appreciate the versatile team of Pentagon Design, which has supported us in the development of Muoto brand and product portfolio in various areas. In the start-up minded development project, the needs can be very diverse and arise with a short notice, however the team has always been agile and ready to find solutions together with us.
